Modern Yard composite fencing is made from a blend of wood powder, recycled plastic and less than 15% performance-enhancing additives. These additives include UV stabilizers that help protect the boards from sun exposure, reduce fading and support long-term color retention. This combination recreates the natural look and texture of wood while providing greater resistance to moisture, rot, splintering and insect damage—with minimal ongoing maintenance.
Modern Yard fencing is built as a modular system consisting of:Posts + Rails + InfillsDepending on the fence design, the system may use horizontal rails, vertical rails or, in certain configurations, no rails. The Modern Yard Composite Fencing System combines our slotted steel posts and compatible rail sets with wood-look composite board infills, which can be installed horizontally or vertically.
WPC, or wood-plastic composite, combines wood powder with plastic and performance-enhancing additives. It offers a wood-like appearance without many of the maintenance requirements of natural wood.PVC is a type of plastic, and most products marketed as vinyl fencing are made primarily from PVC. Unlike WPC, traditional PVC or vinyl fencing does not contain wood powder/fibers.
Each Modern Yard composite fence board measures:3/4" × 5-7/8" × 69-1/2"For easier reference, this is approximately a nominal 3/4" × 6" × 6' board. Always use the exact dimensions when planning or cutting materials.
Modern Yard composite boards contain UV-resistant additives designed to reduce fading and support long-term color retention. However, as with most exterior materials, some natural weathering or gradual color change may occur over time due to sunlight and environmental exposure.
Modern Yard Composite Fence Boards are stocked in three colors in the United States:RedwoodTeakCharcoal
Additional colors shown on our website are available by special order. Special-order colors generally require an approximately eight-week lead time and are subject to minimum-order quantities. Contact Modern Yard to confirm current availability and requirements.

Available options may depend on the selected layout, dimensions and installation conditions.
Yes. Modern Yard fencing is designed to simplify and standardize the installation process through compatible posts, rails, connectors, and infill materials. The system was developed around real-world installation conditions, including different fence heights, section widths, corners, slopes, and gate applications. Basic construction experience and appropriate cutting and installation tools are still recommended.Installation videos and PDF manuals are available in the Resources section of our website.
Yes. Modern Yard composite boards, steel post and rails can be cut to accommodate custom fence heights and section widths. Composite boards can generally be cut using standard woodworking tools with a suitable wood or composite blade.Measure each section carefully and follow the applicable Modern Yard installation guide before cutting.
Yes. Modern Yard composite fencing requires significantly less routine maintenance than traditional wood fencing. It does not require regular staining, sealing or repainting and is resistant to moisture, decay and insect-related damage. For routine cleaning, use water with mild soap and a soft brush or cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive tools that could damage the board surface.
Yes. Modern Yard composite fencing can be installed on a slope using either a stepped or racked layout. For horizontal composite fencing, the Adjustable Connector for Horizontal Fence allow the top and bottom rails to follow many gradual slopes. Stepped installation is generally more suitable for steeper slopes.[Learn how to build a composite fence on a slope.]
Yes. A 7 ft. Modern Yard composite fence generally uses 114" steel posts instead of standard 98" posts. Additional composite boards (2 pcs) or a decorative panel can be added to achieve the desired height. The exact board quantity and post-setting requirements depend on the design, installation direction and local building regulations. Modern Yard recommends obtaining a project-specific material takeoff before ordering.
Yes. Modern Yard composite fencing can be customized for shorter front-yard and semi-privacy applications.1" Spacer for Horizontal Fence can be installed between horizontal boards to create intentional openings, or the system can be configured with top and bottom rails for other open-style designs. Fence-height and visibility requirements should be confirmed with local regulations before installation.
Yes. Modern Yard composite boards can be installed either horizontally or vertically using the corresponding Modern Yard rail system. A typical horizontal fence section measures 6 ft. high by 6 ft. wide, creates a clean, contemporary look, and can incorporate decorative panels. A typical vertical fence section measures 6 ft. high by 8 ft. wide, offers a more traditional board orientation, and can incorporate aluminum slats to add height, airflow, or decorative accents. Both configurations can be customized to create a variety of modern fence designs.
Yes. Like other wood-plastic composite products, Modern Yard composite boards may expand and contract slightly as temperatures change. Installers should follow the spacing requirements in the applicable installation guide to allow sufficient room for movement between the posts. Proper spacing helps prevent the boards from becoming overly constrained, which could cause bowing or deformation.
No. Modern Yard composite boards contain both wood powder and plastic, and the surface coating does not contain flame-retardant additives. Therefore, the Modern Yard Composite Fence System is not classified as a noncombustible or fire-resistant fence system. For projects where fire resistance is a primary requirement, explore the Modern Yard FireGuard™ and Modern Yard Line™ Steel Fence Systems.
Yes. Modern Yard aluminum gate frames can be filled with the same composite boards used in the fence, creating a coordinated fence-and-gate design. Gate frames are available in 42" × 42" and 71" × 42" sizes and can be paired with Modern Yard gate hardware and mechanical combination locks.
Yes. The modular system is designed to simplify installation and may be suitable for homeowners with appropriate construction experience, tools and knowledge of post setting. Professional installation is recommended for taller fences, gates, steep slopes and other complex layouts. Always follow local building requirements and Modern Yard installation guidelines.
Painting Modern Yard composite boards is generally not recommended. The finished surface is designed for outdoor use in its original color, and paint may not bond consistently or perform properly over time.Painting or coating the composite boards will void the warranty. Contact Modern Yard before making any other alterations to the board surface.
