What can stay depends on one physical change. A solid privacy infill catches far more wind than an open one, so every component gets re-judged against a heavier load, not against how it looks today. Posts with sound, deep footings at spacing your new infill supports can often stay. Rails and brackets sized for pickets or mesh usually can't. Why does going solid change what your fence has to carry?

An open fence lets wind pass through it. Pickets, rails, and chain link present a fraction of their footprint to a gust, and the rest blows past. A solid privacy fence presents all of it. Every square foot of new panel becomes area the wind pushes on, and that push travels down through the infill into the rails, from the rails into the posts, and from the posts into the footings.

That's why "the posts look fine" isn't the test. The posts were fine for the job they had. The conversion gives them a different job, and the audit below asks whether they're qualified for it.


Can your existing posts stay?

Run three checks on every post, and be honest about the results, because a marginal post that stays becomes the first thing to lean.

Material and section. The post needs to be a structural member in its own right. Solid wood posts in good condition and steel posts with sound walls are candidates. Light-gauge tube and the thin line posts common on chain link runs rarely qualify for solid infill, and it's worth saying plainly that chain link line posts almost never pass this audit.

Footing condition. Grab the post at chest height and push hard in both directions. Any movement at grade means the footing has failed or the post has deteriorated inside it. Then inspect right at ground level, where wood rots and steel rusts first. A post that's sound at eye level and soft at grade is a replacement.

Spacing compatibility. This is the silent killer of conversions. Open fences often run wider post spacing than solid panels support, and a structurally perfect post in the wrong position is still a replacement, because your new infill has a maximum supported span and the posts either match it or they don't. Measure every bay before you order anything.

Worth checking. Count how many posts pass all three tests. If it's under about two thirds of the line, skip ahead to the section on when partial reuse costs more than starting clean, because you may already be there.

What happens to the rails and framework?

Rails sized to carry pickets weren't sized to carry panels. Solid infill is heavier, and it also transfers wind load into the rails continuously instead of letting most of it through. Undersized rails announce themselves within a season, first as a visible sag along the top line, then as connections working loose at the posts.

The connections deserve their own look. Even where a rail section is adequate, the brackets and fasteners tying it to the posts were chosen for the old load, and bracket points are the usual first failure in a converted fence.

Here's the uncomfortable economics. Framework is where partial reuse quietly costs more than replacement, because adapting old rails and brackets to new panels is labor-heavy work, and the labor usually exceeds the price of framework designed for the panel you're installing. Price both paths before assuming reuse is the cheap one.


Why does the infill always change, and what are you changing to?

The infill is the conversion. Everything else in this article is about what supports it.

Should the gate stay if the fence around it changed?

Almost never, and for two separate reasons.

Visually, a picket or chain link gate set into a run of solid panels breaks the line the conversion was supposed to create, and it also breaks the privacy at exactly the point people walk up to.

Structurally, a solid-infill gate leaf is heavier than the open leaf your old hinges and latch were chosen for, and old gate hardware rarely has the mounting prep the new frame needs. Spacing that forces custom cuts. Nonstandard bays mean field-cut infill in every bay, which trades a one-time material cost for permanent labor cost.

Can I reuse chain link posts for a privacy fence?

Do I need deeper footings for a privacy fence?

Often, yes. Solid infill increases the leverage on every footing, and footings that were adequate for an open fence can be undersized for a solid one. Can I keep my gate when converting to a privacy fence?
